This city lies on the shores of Lake Atitlan. The largest in Guatemala, it is surrounded by volcanoes, the lake is actually a crater. We stayed here for a night before we caught a boat across the lake to the Homestay (next entry).

Lionel and I walked along the shoreline. There were so many boats of all shapes and sizes waiting to ferry passengers or day trippers to various Mayan villages.

Being in the highlands, the temperature was so much cooler, it was a pleasure to wander around.

Before we arrived there, we visited Chichicastenango Market. It was massive! And while I usually love a good market, this place was overwhelming, with many women following us around trying to get us to buy their beautiful weaving. Focussing on me, as Lionel was singing no,no,no behind me as we walked…that did give them a chuckle.

I finally bought some lovely woven pieces, now tucked in the bottom of Lionel’s bag. There were so many things to choose from, anyone of the pieces would have been gorgeous, but I really need to think twice before I add to the collection!

All that colour is right up your alley Chris!

colour and weaving overload. How did you choose? Was the market for locals or tourists? Mind boggling how much craft people can produce. Looks amazing. Had a chuckle at Lionels’no’s.

Well I hardly bought anything! You know how it gets! The markets were as intense as in India…I’d forgotten about that!
