Antigua

Our last stop in Guatemala was the old capital, Antigua. Cobblestoned streets, colourfully painted houses, narrow, slippery, uneven footpaths and window ledges at about my head height! All added to increased chances of tripping over (or banging my head). But I managed to navigate the well set out city, with the help of Lionel holding tightly to my hand!

We happened to be there on a day when a religious parade took place, the float carrying the religious statures was huge, about 100 men and women swayed in time with the drumbeat,as the float passed by the crowd. We were on a rooftop nearby having a drink, and had an excellent view. The streets were decorated with coloured sawdust pictures and fruit & veges. It was quite remarkable.

We also visited a macadamia farm and a small brewery. As well we wandered into this very luxurious hotel which had been built around an old convent and ruins. We thought it was free to enter the museum, but that was for hotel guests!

Antigua had a slightly cooler temperature and it was a lovely old city to relax in before the third phase of our trip. The morning we left, the haze lifted and you could see the volcano looming over the town. Oh we also had an earthquake while we were here! No damage, but it woke us up!

    • A lot of pomp and ceremony! Many of the devotees were dressed immaculately in either suits or robes. The women all had matching mantillas, which reminded me of mass back in the sixties.
