It has taken three attempts to reach this city over a number of years and finally after a long flight from Sydney via Istanbul, we have arrived!

Our taxi driver had no idea where our hotel was and dropped us at Tahrir Square at around 11pm. (We had booked this service, but the hotel was not listed, just the square, not really his fault!)

We don’t use a mobile with sim while we are away, so had to rely on a screenshot which had the address in Arabic. Luckily for us the police are all around the square, and old men sit drinking tea, both of which helped us very quickly locate our hotel behind a gate on the main square. Phew! I was sure we were going to be wandering the streets for ages.

The hotel looked a bit worn and weary, but the young people at the desk were very polite and helpful. In no time we were in our room and ready for a long rest.
It’s warm here, but not too oppressive. We are just taking it slow, wandering around town for a few hours and then back for a nap in the heat of the day.

PS I know we said we were going to Eastern Europe, but changed our mind a couple of weeks ago. Just Egypt then Greece. Much more relaxing!
I’m glad you found your hotel – that could have been a worry looking through a maze. Looks wonderful – enjoy exploring

We are glad we did too! I was starting to worry we would never find it, especially being late at night. But the square was full of people and it felt very safe. It had taken ages to get here, waited five or six hours at Instanbul Airport until we boarded the flight to Cairo.

Happy to hear you arrived safe and sound. Enjoy the experience. You might have to “walk like an Egyptian” on those paths!

Haha! Yes we will, it’s also an experience crossing the roads, you just have to be brave and start walking across as speeding vehicles approach!

Not quite my mental picture of the Nile….where are the bullrushes? Glad you eventually found your hotel though, you must have had a few anxious moments!

I think it will look more like we imagine once we are out of Cairo. I’ll find some bullrushes if I can. Cairo has 20 million people and many of them were out and about enjoying the Spring Festival public holiday in the evening.

Having trouble getting access to reply to you. So happy you have finally made it to Egypt! How was your flight on Turkish airlines?

Turkish Airlines were good. We had a spare seat between us for the first leg to KL so that was a bonus. We start our tour today. We’ve been walking around Cairo (in the mornings) and coming back for a siesta in the afternoons when it really heats up. But it’s dry heat, so not as oppressive.
