Cairo, slowly, slowly…

We’ve been doing quite a bit of walking around town over the past couple of days. On Monday it was a public holiday, the streets were very quiet in the morning as we headed off to the Museum of Islamic Art.

Being here, after some of our other travels brings a lot of our knowledge and experiences about history into renewed focus. It feels like all the events of the Ancient World have linked up for us. It makes me very emotional!

The museum was exquisite, the detail of some of the artworks reinforced my love of crafty things. So much care went into producing even small pieces. Centuries later, I feel an affiliation with these craftspeople.

Later that evening we wandered down to the Nile, where many Egyptian families were enjoying the Spring Festival holiday. We joined a 15 minute cruise across the water, listening to the pumping music and watching the selfie takers.

Yesterday we walked to the Opera House, spent a bit of time in the gardens and a lot of time in two fantastic free art galleries.

Tahrir Square comes to life as the sun goes down. The traffic and people increase. Men on flimsy scaffolds work through the night renovating shop fronts, horns blast everywhere, crossing the road is a challenge and it’s a fabulous time to sit and watch the world go by.

  1. I was emotional too at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. People in the West don’t understand and appreciate the incredible artistic, scientific and mathematical skills and discoveries made by the many Islamic cultures of the world hundreds of years ago.

I can just imagine the sounds and smells in the streets. Fabulous!
