Lionel visited this small town 47 years ago on his way back to Australia. He often talked about it, and when we decided to come to Crete we knew we wanted to see it.
There are only three buses a day, so we caught the 7:30am from the bus station, a two hour ride to the south of the island took us across hills covered in olive trees and some vineyards. Past small villages perched on hillsides and through very narrow streets (which I’m amazed the coach-size bus could navigate), and we arrived.

We walked down to the harbour and along a path to the pebbly beach. Now there are a number of resorts with chairs and umbrellas for hire. Nothing like that when Lionel was here last, but he recognised his accommodation (Selena’s) which had been the last row of buildings…not anymore!

The water was crystal clear and once we had made our way over the pebbles and into deeper water it was delightful. Afterwards I changed on the beach, no one worries about seeing a bit of flesh here!

Lunch at a cafe overlooking the harbour was delicious, along with the wine. (I would have loved a nap after that, but we had a long wait for the 5pm bus!)

There are some great colourful mosaics on the break wall and we spent some time wandering around streets near the harbour and just taking in the surroundings. It was a lovely day out, and although the little fishing village has expanded somewhat, and there are a lot more resort style buildings, it was still a worthwhile trip.

Fantastic that you got to Agia Galini again Lionel. Looks great.👍

Did you go there Brett? It is definitely a sun-seeker sort of town, with a number of resorts behind the beach, cafes and beach chairs! None of that was there when Lionel first stayed. He said there wasn’t even a way to get to the beaches along the coast, and it’s hilly, so they swam near the harbour.

Sadly no Chris. Went out to a generic Greek isle probably one which was the closest to the mainland!

Yes it was! I wanted to do the same thing in Asia after thirty years. Things rarely stay the same, but the way we remember things also changes over time I think!
