San Christobel

Our overnight bus trip bought us to the Margarita Hotel in the heart of San Christobel. A number of the cobbled streets are pedestrians only, lined with cafes and stalls selling all manner of things. It’s a bit cooler here, being up in the mountains, which is a welcome relief for a couple of days.

Yesterday we visited a local church and craft centre. The church was amazing. No pictures allowed inside. There were thousands of candles along each wall, and rather than pews, the worshippers set up rows of candles on the floor and knelt and prayed on pine needles. After the worshippers left there were a group of cleaners sweeping up the wax and pine needles, ready for the next person. Intriguing.

The entrance was very decorative

We also viewed a cemetery nearby, where the crosses were coloured depending on the age group of the dead.

After we visited the co-op, where women were weaving, selling their wares and demonstrating traditional skills ( more pics on Instagram).

Mum’s busy so the baby is kept amused with a bag of yarn

The central square (Zocalo) is full of life and I love the bright colours of the buildings. Some of the snack foods are in the same bright colours!

Reminds me of prawn chips

Today we went on a boat trip along Sumidero Canyon. Some of the walls reached 2,500ft. It was a very different perspective viewing it this way. We saw crocodiles, spider monkeys and lots of bird life. It was spectacular.

This afternoon we went searching for the Textile Museum (of course) and the local Artisan Markets. So many people creating beautiful things, makes me wish we never went into mass production of clothes.

Pussycat, pussycat…
Very colourful t-shirts
Mmm…maybe not my next project
Maybe this will be a new interest, felt embroidery

We finished the day with a pizza and coffee frappe. Perfect.

Heaven!
And I think they have enough oranges to juice!

  1. Glad you’ve climbed up in elevation and have a cooler climate. The candles, wax and pine needles sound like a fire hazard combo! Surprised the church hasn’t burnt to the ground! Your photo of the tortilla maker is a classic! Reminds me of the Mona Lisa. Can you buy me a pair of crocheted slippers, size ten, to bring home for me??? This trip is so you Chris!! Enjoy.
