Suchitoto, El Salvador

We crossed from Honduras, back into Guatemala and then into El Salvador. Three countries in a day! Along the way, Aura, our tour leader gave us a detailed history of El Salvador. What a tough time they have had! (For centuries since the Spanish Conquest).

But today the country is thriving, the president is promoting tourism and it seems to be working for them.

Suchitoto is a lovely small town, it comes alive on the weekends when locals from surrounding villages and towns come to visit. The town square is small, and the roads are not so steep leading up to the hotel. Down to the lake is quite a trek, so we just opted to look from a distance. It was impressive.

Lots of projects in the area to involve local people.

We visited an art gallery, a Plate Museum and had a demonstration of Indigo dyeing.

One night, we made our own pupusas for dinner. These were round tortillas filled with various bits like cheese, beans, mushrooms and spinach. Very tasty!

    • Yes, when I started reading about their Civil War, it was a sad struggle indeed. It’s a very small country in Central America, and the locals are warm and welcoming everywhere we go.
