Granada

Granada is such a lovely city. It is celebrating 500 years of existence (along with Leon- there’s a bit of rivalry there!) This morning we had breakfast at Smiles Cafe. This is a cafe run by Deaf people, and is a project that was started 15 years ago by a Spaniard that came to Nicaragua for a visit, and stayed. There is no assistance from the government for people with disabilities.

As well as the cafe, there is a hammock workshop, where a number of deaf people are employed weaving hammocks. We all had a go weaving a few bits of the biggest hammock as part of a world record.

Tanja, Riki and I also visited an Art Gallery and Museum. Lionel opted to head back to the hotel for a swim.

There were some excellent exhibits, and once again it was housed in a beautiful old villa.

Granada felt like it was deserted when we arrived. There were hardly any cars on the streets, nice wide footpaths and the only thing we had to be wary of were the potholes along the street and holes in the footpath!

  1. Hi Chris,

the galleries look interesting. Love the sign language chart. They use American Sign Language which is interesting seeing they were a British colony. Was thinking about you today…Being productive …… doing a yarn sort …..I went swimming on Friday. It’s 21-23 degrees here today. Meant to tell you also the Lake is open quite a wide channel.
continue to enjoy your adventures. Have you been travelling with a group?

    • I thought of you when we visited the Smiles Cafe. I can’t see any reference to the British! The Spanish founded it in 1524, hence they’re celebrating 500 years! A lot of pirates visited between 1665 and 1670. There is another Granada in Spain…
PS hope the lake is warm enough for a swim when we get back!
