After saying goodbye to everyone in San Jose, Lionel and I headed off to the bus terminal to catch a bus for Quepos on the Pacific Coast. I was a bit concerned that our lack of Spanish might cause a problem, but thankfully it didn’t and after a short delay we were on our way.

Three and a half hours later we caught our first glimpse of the town, the bay was more for fishing boats and not really the place for swimming. But there were a number of inviting restaurants along the waterfront, and our hotel was a short stroll from the main strip.

There is a pathway above the shore and we saw plenty of iguanas sunning themselves. We also walked past the marina and a new development, some very expensive looking vessels were moored. It was too hot to do too much so the pool back at our hotel was calling.

The following day we caught a local bus down to Manuel Antonio Reserve. We chose not to visit the park as by this stage of the trip we’d seen enough wildlife and rainforests, so didn’t fancy paying to swim at the beaches (which are supposed to be gorgeous).

Strangely, one of the beaches is free outside the park, and as we walked away from the many vendors and surf schools, towards the northern end of the beach, it was deserted. The sand is extremely fine and dark in colour, so a bit hotter to walk on.

We stayed for a couple of hours and then headed back to Quepos, and the pool.

Getting to the last legs of your journey! Recycled fish sculpture is cool…

It’s made of plastic bottles! I told Lionel it was too big for our backyard, but he might attempt a smaller one!

Didn’t have a chance to find out, they just lay about on the rocks and scamper off if people approach them. They come in lots of different sizes too!

It was refreshing and a pleasant temperature, but a bit rough for lolling about…it was lovely to be away from the crowded Southern end of the beach. The tree trunk was massive, and gorgeous.

Beautiful! Some of those beaches look like the ones at home – one even looks like Lake Cathie at the moment. The new development will certainly change the place.

I thought the same when the water was rushing in, and yes development just keeps on happening…for better or worse!
