Kolympari, Crete

We wanted to spend a few days in a quiet seaside town, so we caught the bus from Heraklion to Chania, and then another bus to Kolympari. Once again the bus ride gave us a chance to view the countryside and changing coastline. It started raining as we left Chania, with what seemed like hundreds of other tourists, all scrambling to get on the large bendy bus.

As we drove along the coast, I started wondering whether I had made a good choice. There were wall to wall resorts and bars, full of people looking very sunburnt! Oh no, this wasn’t what I had anticipated!

By the time we reached Kolymvari, at the end of the line, the numbers had thinned somewhat and there only seemed to be the occasional resort. Much more our kind of place!

Karmi Apartments had a pool, and we were looking forward to swimming in it after seeing the pebbly, windy beach. Unfortunately there was a huge sandstorm on Sunday and everyone was busy hosing away the red dust and sand from the Sahara! So the pool was emptied.

Happily the weather improved today, and we managed a swim. It was cool, and hard work walking over pebbles, but the sun was shining and the beach looked a lot more inviting than the day before.

Nothing much to report from here, just a few slow days and some delicious Greek food, washed down with wine. Very easy to take!

  1. Looks like your kind of town, not too busy, your shirt matches the colour of the blue umbrellas, very Greek! The water is very blue and looks like you had the waves to yourself, sandals were a blessing I see…

  2. Pleased you found a less touristy area at Kolympari at end of bus run. Plastic sandals would have been a godsend for shingle beach. The food looks good. Also healthy!

    • It all turned out just fine, and we’ve had three relaxing days. Back on the overnight ferry tonight and then Hydra for three days. Finally had some octopus yesterday. I thought it would be plentiful, but most of the menus tell you it is frozen.
