Walk to Mandraki~Hydra#2

Yesterday we followed the coastal path around the island to a “sandy” beach. It took us about 45 minutes, stopping often along the way to gaze out to sea, or be amazed by the houses clinging to the cliffs.

The beach is very small and three quarters of it was taken up by Mandraki Beach Resort with its deck chairs and umbrellas. There was a small public section at the end. The wind was blowing and yes, there was sand instead of pebbles, but it wasn’t very inviting.

So we turned around and walked back! We could have caught a sea taxi from the Port for 10 Euros each, glad we didn’t, as it was quite disappointing. Oh well. The walk though was spectacular, I still wonder how the people manage without vehicles. There are a few trucks about, moving garbage, huge rocks and assorted building materials. But there certainly aren’t many corner shops!

Walking back through town, I slipped over! On flat smooth pavers! There was a little bit of horse poo and I found it. Luckily not too much damage as far as I can tell. Just a sore arm, and a few bruises. (And here I was thinking how well I have been navigating uneven surfaces).

The port was buzzing with day trippers, so many people waiting to get back on their ship and on to the next island…

  1. Oh Chris. Hope you’re okay after falling. It’s very interesting countryside. So rocky and steep. Hope you have a nice dinner tonight and some alcoholic beverages. Take care.Sent from my iPhone

  2. Glad your fall wasn’t serious. With all the walking you’re doing you’ll be very fit by end of trip! Liked cat “on guard”.👍

  3. Those old rusty chains could tell a story or two! And those incredible stairs. So easy to “have a fall” on all those gravelly paths and precarious steps and so glad you didn’t do any serious damage. Take care in Athens xxxx
