Fethiye…Tourist town

Fethiye, Turkey

Well we were very surprised when we arrived to find so many apartment blocks full of British holidaymakers spending their two or three week yearly vacation in the sun in Fethiye or Oludeniz or Ovacik! The towns reminded us of Surfers Paradise (minus the waves) and that’s a bit too busy for us! But there are plenty of things to see and do…just watching the tourists enjoying themselves in their pubs, bars and resorts gives us a chuckle…last night it was a full on 80s party next door…I just wanted to join them! Flash dance and Dirty Dancing! We visited Kayakoy* an abandoned Greek village and then climbed over the hill and down to Oludeniz 6 kilometres away…stunning view from above and I almost made it without stumbling over the gravel and loose rocks…but not quite…luckily no real harm done to the ankle. Today we visited Saklikent Gorge and watched the ever changing countryside from a local bus full of villagers going about their daily lives. *author Louis De Bernieres was inspired by the story of Kayakoy and wrote “Birds without Wings”…maybe we should have a look at it in Bookgroup!
