Catching the train to Mombasa

Mombasa, Kenya

We arrived early at the Nairobi train station, as we had no idea where we had to go to pick up our tickets. It was very simple really! The taxi driver had to drop us down the street, as there were spikes on all the roads leading to the station! We passed through security and there, on our right was the upper class booking office…it was like they were waiting for us! ( They did give us someone else’s ticket however). We waited in the cafeteria for a while, and then on the comfortable lounges in a cordoned off area, by this time we had met most of our fellow passengers as the train was delayed and didn’t actually leave until almost 10pm (scheduled departure was 7pm!) In the end the announcement said “train to Mombasa departing in 5 minutes from platform three – not one! A bit of a mad scramble and away we went! Dinner served at the sound of a bell, as was breakfast…bedding supplied…made up while we ate…and the train arrived at 4pm, not 10am as expected…no problem when you aren’t in a hurry! PS They are building a new line from Nairobi to Mombasa…for a fast train…3 and a half hours only…the end of an era I think, so glad we managed to travel this line!
