Ambling around the old town

Mombasa, Kenya

We are staying at the New Palm Tree hotel for a couple of nights before heading up the coast. This hotel is just what I imagined! Louvre doors and shutters, an old wooden staircase, a shady, palm filled courtyard, a rickety fan, honking traffic outside, a high ceiling and assorted other old fashioned features. But also good pizzas! Today we wandered off to the old town and Fort Jesus. It’s hot in Mombasa! There are tuk tuks everywhere, and official guides who want to show us around…we just wanted to walk…along the way we visited a fish market, saw a wedding procession and found ourselves in a labyrinth of backstreets that didn’t look like they were going anywhere! We spent an hour or so in the Portuguese fort and then walked back to the hotel. Enough excitement for the day! Tomorrow we are driving an hour north to Kilifi, then Watamu, and lastly Malindi before we head off to KL via Dubai. Looking forward to just relaxing for a few days (and sleeping in!)
