Travelling on the Trans-Mongolian Express

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

After walking our way around Beijing, getting lost (cause we turned right instead of left!) and watching the heavy security in place for a visit from President Putin, it was time to catch the train to Mongolia. Beijing train station is massive, security is high and you have to show tickets and passports to enter. But it was all smooth “sailing” after that! The journey itself was fairly quiet. A few visits from the baby next door being a highlight! The border crossing was a long drawn out process…we arrived about 9:30pm, surrendered our passports and waited for hours while the train carriages were raised individually and the wheels changed to accommodate the different rail gauge in Mongolia. Trying to stay awake to complete customs in Mongolia was a challenge, and finally by about 1am we were on our way to Ulaanbaatar, hooray!
