In April this year we flew to Fiji and visited four of the Yasawa Islands. The best thing about the flight was how short it was! Wish they were all like that.

After a night in Nadi, we headed to the port to catch The Yasawa Flyer to our first destination. We booked at the port and had tickets for all our islands. It’s a very smooth process and you can hop on and hop off your nominated stops. There are smaller local boats to transfer you to the islands. We had three nights booked at each place.

Eco Haven (Wayalailai)

Our Bure overlooked the beach and was the perfect place to watch the action around us. The village owns and operates the bungalows, feeds us very heartily and offers any number of tours. We were happy to just wander along the beach and do a bit of snorkeling.

Korovou Nature Lodge (Naviti)

We had a very enjoyable three days here. The snorkeling was excellent and the place was very quiet. We met some lovely young people from Germany who had been working in Australia on a lychee farm in Queensland, the discussions around the dinner table were many and varied…AI, modern cars, backpacker jobs in mining, new Facebook laws, travelling on a budget, and of course the madness in the world. They were surprised that we had travelled so much and commented a number of times that their parents and grandparents would never have ventured so far from home!

Long Beach Escape (Matacawalevi)

We stayed in a lovely renovated Bure overlooking the water, with an excellent breeze coming through the many louvred windows. Again plenty of conversations with young German travellers, and to our surprise a Canadian couple we had met on the previous island turned up.

We visited the village and school while we were there. Most of the people were away watching a school netball game on another island. (Gave me a chance to have a good look around the school). Our guide was a delight. He was the 12 year old grandson of Kasa, who ran the island very efficiently. She shared lots of information about the islands, family connections, medical facilities, second hand stores in Nadi!

Sunrise Lagoon(Nanuya Lailai)

Our last stop was our most rustic, again, run by the village and everyone had a part to play. Our first glimpse as we rounded the bend was of a bright yellow hut, perched right on the edge of the shore, at high tide, the waves were lapping at the verandah. It looked very dilapidated, but it was perfectly fine and ours for three nights. On the second night we had wild weather, rain, wind and crashing waves!

As is always the case we met some very unique travellers. People from Austria, Germany, France and Slovakia making their way across the planet and with strong views and opinions on most topics!

Nadi

A long ride back to Nadi on the Yasawa Flyer with one day to spare before our return flight. The centre of town isn’t very large and we had plenty of time to wander in and out of the many shops lining the main street.
