After waiting on the tarmac at Kingsford Smith for a couple of hours (due to an unfortunate medical emergency on board) we flew to Kuala Lumpur. Two movies, some documentaries and a bit of game playing later we arrived, yay!

Next morning bright and early we headed for Sabah, a comfortable two and a half hours away. I sat and chatted to a lovely Malaysian woman, Rose and so time flew by! Haha. A short bus ride into town (approx 40cents each) and then we walked along the waterfront to find our hotel.

We’ve been here for four days and now know our way around! Being back in Asia after a few years is great, although the uneven footpaths are a bit dodgy…so I really have to concentrate on where I put my feet!

We spent one day snorkeling on Mamutik Island, part of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, plenty of colourful fish and some coral. Lots of beginner snorkellers, all having a go and interesting to watch.

As it is very hot walking, we did a two hour tour on the hop on hop off bus. A very comprehensive route around the city. No use hopping off as they only run two buses, so it would be a very long wait between stops!

There are so many cafes and shops! Lots of malls with empty premises and hundreds of stalls at the Craft Market. A bit overwhelming at times.

The waterfront is a hive of activity with fish and produce markets all vying for trade. The fruit stalls sell durian, rambutan, mangosteen and a few others that we don’t usually have. All looking very fresh.

Most of the buildings are post WWII as much of the city was destroyed during that conflict. It was moving to see the memorial to Australian soldiers and to note the appreciation of the people of KK for the Australians who helped in its recovery.
