Orangutans and Sun Bears

Our main aim in visiting Sepilok was to see the rehabilitation centres. Lucky for us, we had already seen orangutans in Sarawak and Sumatra, so this was a real bonus.

The morning feeding session attracted hundreds of tourists. Unluckily for them the orangutans didn’t show up! Evidently they have plenty of fruit available in the jungle, so don’t need to visit the feeding platform! (We waited over an hour just in case.)

So we went to the Sun Bear centre across the road. This is a really informative facility, and around 50 bears are cared for. Many have been traumatised and badly mistreated. Some will be released back into the wild, but most live their lives in this sanctuary.

In the afternoon we headed back to the Nursery to watch the young orangutans learn survival skills from the older ones. They are fabulous to watch!

Finally, with a smaller crowd in attendance, the animals came to feed. We spent an hour watching their interactions, it was a fantastic experience.
