For those who know their history, Sandakan is a sad reminder of the cruelty that is inflicted on humans by humans in the name of war. During World War Two, Australian and British POW’s were interned here under atrocious conditions.

When the winds of war changed and the Allies were close to victory in the Pacific region, the POW’s were forced to relocate to Ranau, which was further inland and more isolated, these were the brutal “Death Marches” and only a handful of prisoners survived.

There is a park to commemorate the sacrifices made by the soldiers, as well as remembering the risks the local people took to help them survive. It is a very sobering place to visit, and a strong reminder of the real cost of war. Will humans never learn to live in peace?

We also visited Agnes Keith House. She was an American author, interned during the war with her son and husband. I first knew of her through a 1950s movie called “Three Came Home” which I must have seen as a youngster. It was one of those things you never forget, so I was amazed to discover she was based in Sandakan.

The waterfront is the best place to enjoy the evening breeze, there are a few restaurants to choose from and we have had tasty meals for less than $20. Tonight I also tried a sweet corn smoothie, mmm different!
