Assos, Turkey
We asked about three bus companies how to get to Assos from Ayvalik…no one gave a direct answer…we didn’t have our Lonely Planet map with us at the time so just had to trust the bus companies would get us where we wanted to go! After passing the turnoff to Behramkale, we started to think it might be a problem getting back…but what’s the use of worrying? 22km further down the road we arrived in Ayvacik, and there waiting in a small parking space was a dolmus (minibus) to Assos. So back down the road for another twenty five kilometres and a trip through a number of villages (to drop off passengers) we arrived in Behramkale…so glad…the effort was really worthwhile. Today we visited the temple of Athena, it looked like just another archaeological site…until you climb the hill and saw the columns, overlooking the Aegean Sea. I think Brad Pitt might have sat there during the filming of Troy! Maybe! Then we walked down the winding road to the harbour and the small pebbly beach…easy! It was the walk back up that was tiresome in the hot afternoon sun. But again well worth the effort!
