Slipping and sliding up Dune 45

Sossusvlei, Namibia

Today we were up and at the Namib Naukluft National Park gate at 6am. This was so we could climb the sand dune before it got too hot. What was I thinking? Well, it was windy this morning…that added to the adventure. I only climbed about a quarter, and then asked myself what was I trying to prove? Worse than trudging over soft sand on the beach! Each time I stopped, the sand whipped over me…oh no, just like in Lawrence of Arabia, would I be covered? Never to be seen again! Lionel kept climbing, but I gave up fairly quickly and contentedly took pictures of him from the base. We also travelled to Deadvlei and Sossusvlei, one a past and one a present oasis…no water about, it was large clay pan. Very stark, and gorgeous dead trees. Our last stop was at Seisram Canyon, where we walked through and climbed over crumbling rocks. Almost winter in the desert and I’m about to go for a swim!
