Wandering through the desert at Spitzkoppe

Khorixas, Namibia

It was a very bumpy drive out to Spitzkoppe this morning, but well worth the effort. The mountains, weathered by rain and wind were absolutely spectacular! We walked into the desert and visited some of the San rock paintings that have been there for over 4,000 years. It was a treat to see such things in situ and all that prehistoric art history came flooding back to me. There were various dwellings along the way. You just can’t begin to imagine how people survive in this harsh climate, but they rely on their cattle or goats and collecting crystals from the desert for the tourists. The Herero tribe also had roadside stalls selling little dolls dressed in colourful dresses, just like they were…it just makes you wonder if they can sell enough to get by.
